Airport lounges are no longer just for first and business class travellers. That's right, nowadays even if you are flying economy and have absolutely no airline loyalty, you can pay to enter a new style of pay-per-use lounges.
PAY-PER-USE LOUNGES are first class lounges that are open to ALL travellers regardless of airline flown - for a relatively small fee. In May 2010, I visited the Plaza Premium Lounges in the Toronto airport (see my blog entry) and I have to say that if you have a layover, a cancelled flight or an early morning check-in or don't have time for breakfast before you leave for the airport, there is good value to be found in some of these lounges.
AIRLINE LOUNGES are first class lounges that have more restrictions for entry. To access these lounges, you must have a first or business class ticket with the airline (or a partner airline) that operates the lounge. Depending on the airline or alliance program, economy ticket holders may be able to purchase a day pass - this is more common in the North American airport lounges.
While all lounges are different, some features that you can expect are:
- buffet style meals and/or snacks
- unlimited beverages (including alcohol in some lounges)
- WiFi for laptop users and computer workstations for those who are not have a laptop
- comfortable seating
- showers (great for those of you who have just spent the night in the terminal the night before)
- massages (usually for an extra fee)
- sleep rooms (not available in all lounges)
In the airport guides on this site, I include lounges that economy class travellers can use through the pay-per-use or day pass method. (If I am missing any or a new lounge opens up, please let me know)
A few nice lounges have given us coupons to share with travellers. You can usually pay to use many of these pay-per-use lounges at the door. Entrance will be subject to availability. Keep in mind that some lounges are small (and busy prior to large flights), so if you want to guarantee a spot you should book in advance.
To add or update a lounge please email Donna with information (location, facilities/services, rates) and photos.
