"Myself and my boyfriend were travelling through India during a freak heat wave in Feb. The temperatures in Panjim reached 38 degrees, we were litterally melting. Making our way from Margao (Goa) to Mangalore (Karnataka) we decided splurge on two 2nd class AirConditioned tickets for the overnight train. We honored Goa with a parting glass.. err.. bottle of rum.. which may have eased our comfort. The main station is a large open concent area, it is well lit and this is were most people waited for the trains. The mosquitos are terrible!!! There is an information booth, which was staffed. However, they spoke very little english and seemed to find our presence there a nuisance. To get to the washrooms you have to make your way through the segregated waiting rooms which are completely dark, filthy, have strange men hiding in them, and were a vague indication of what the bathroom was to be.. but with half a bottle of Old Monk in, I couldn't be choosey. The toilets at the station were some of the worst I saw in India. The walls were crumbling, there was no toilet seat on the one western toilet and the bowl was cracked making it completely useless, although it was obvious that fact hadn't occurred to others. The squat toilet seemed to be a toilet/shower and offered no privacy.. and I think the part that bottered me the most is that the washroom was obviously an add on to the station and hadn't been completely attached. There was a large gap in the wall were the two buildings were "connected" which meant the place was filled with all kinds of creepy crawly things. I was scratching mosquito bites in awkward places for a week!I will say this, the train was immaculate. Upon boarding we received clean starched linens, and had a large berth to ourselves. We passed the night being rocked to sleep by the train and felt very safe. A word of advice, try to get a berth as far from the end of the car as possible so that you aren't disturbed by people walking between the cars."
