I spent 3 monthes traveling in India with 6 other students and had an amazing time. Here is a little story about the Varanasi (Banaras) train station; it was about 9 pm and the train was hours late at this point so our group was playing cards with all our bags in a pile. My friend julia had been taking cooking classes and she bought bag full of spices to take home. All of a sudden I hear this ripping shuffling sound and look down at the edge of our pile, It was a giant rat ripping open her bag! we scared it away and julia decided to aandon her contaminated spices and left them on the ground. What do you know the rat comes scurring right back, takes the whole shoping bag in its teeth and runs of into the night. We laughed for hours.
"Dirty smelly place full of irritating touts. I was told the 'retiring rooms' were full but I greased a palm or two and a vacancy suddenly arose. Very simple but comfortable. Good to use if your train arrives before dawn and you don't feel like finding your accommodation in the dark. Safe if you are in a room - very unsafe in and around the platforms."
