"Xi'an Airport in west central China is an absolute hoot. It should be the set for all black and white 1930's B Grade barnstorming/airshow/flying hero movies. You walk across the tarmac to and from the planes. The tiny terminal has to date from the 1920's 0r 1930's. It has more of a lobby than a check in area. A couple of guys standing in an archway are security. The departure & arrival area/room/space leads right to the tarmac. None of those confusing multiple gates. Seating, No. Sleeping, you would probably be the first. The shops in the lobby and around the lobby balcony are the most charming aspect. No duty free banners at all. Just individual mom and pop booths, eager to make a sale and a living. They will gladly blow the dust off an item and negotiate a price. Actually some very nice items at bargain prices. My wife discovered the donkey meat at one stand, and since it is hard to get in our part of S. China, I was elected to lug some home. Luckily, for me and the donkey herd, we don't go to Xi'an often. Four reasons to go to Xi'an. 1) the airport 2)the walled city 3) the fabulous terracotta army 4) Donkey meat. Zai jian "
