- plastic bucket seats
by Robert
"I went to the 1st Zuhai Airshow in 96 and the flight in, it was delayed for four hours in Shanghai, so when we arrived it was around 11. The normal last flight was 9 (this was a new airport) so there are no taxis or buses outside and the city's about an hour away by car. So I tried to sleep in the arrivals hall but all they had were plastic orange bucket seats and after an hour or so I gave up. Then, just kind of out of nowhere, some guy came up (there were more than a few stranded travellers) and offered to take us to some hotel by minibus. Potentially dangerous, yes, but hell, I sure am not gonna sleep in that airport. So we went and came upon this hotel that's like fifteen stories high in the middle of nowhere in the countryside, and it's not even officially open yet! We were given a room on the top floor without sheets (they were brought in) and the window was so low it was almost possible for me to fall out. The hotel was pretty bare and there was nothing but two girls at the front desk, and the phones/TVs/showers in the room didn't work either. In the morning I waited two hours on the side of the road for a taxi and we had no idea where we were since I didn't speak Cantonese."
