Traveller Comments....

"They will not let you into the boarding area until 30 minutes before your flight to ensure that your boredom and discomfort will encourage you to purchase more over priced food and souvenirs before the next plane load of camera happy 'nature lovers' arrive. " (Donna)

Claiming luggage on arrival was a free for all. They lay the luggage out under a pavillion and then open the gates and the crowd rushes in to get their luggage! It was crazy! (all part of the adventure of travel in my opinion though!)

Departing from there it was crowded! No seats available in the departure area.

Got stuck here for over 4 hours cause our plane from the mainland had mechanical problems. 4 hours doesn't sound like a long time except the only seating is limited hard wooden benches. No a/c and it's HOT, but airport has only 2 walls so there is a breeze on rare occasion. Construction was going on to expand the airport so things may improve. Bathrooms are dirty, and if there is toilet paper, it's by the door when you walk into the bathroom so grab it then or you'll be outta luck. No PA system so you have to listen very carefully to what fights are departing when or you'll miss it. We had to go thru security 4 times even tho we never left the secure area - something about boarding a different plane! No where to spend overnight and I doubt they would permit it; too open and there is NOTHING but the airport on this deserted, desert island. Found just 2 payphones and neither worked w/ an internationally calling card and the instructions were impossible to read (in Spanish). They now have a few internet stations but they are limited (4-5) and expensive and you have to stand. One restaurant sells limited food that's overpriced. Souvenir prices are now government controlled in Ecuador so they are all the same wherever you purchase and I thought they were very reasonable.

Airport Hotels

There are no hotels at the airport and is highly unlikely that the military will allow you to sleep here. You will have to take the ferry back to Santa Cruz Island and then board the bus back to Puerto Ayora. If I recall correctly, Sol y Mar is the closest hotel to the bus stop. Search for hotels in Puerto Ayora.
