What to Expect

St. Maarten Airport (code: SXM) consists of a mid-size terminal which received extensive damage from 2017’s Hurricane Irma.  The airport has reopened.

Sleeping in St. Maarten Airport

In this guide we may refer to locations as “landside” and “airside”. Landside is the public area of the terminal located in the non-secure zone, before security. When the prospect of sleeping on the floor or in a chair gives you nightmares, there is good news for those who are looking to sleep in comfort at St. Maarten Airport.   If you are on a layover, you must pass through immigration/security as there is no transit hotel or accommodations on the airside.  Several nearby hotels can be found within a 10-minute drive from the airport.  At the time of this update, we were unable to find any hotels that provide free airport shuttles.

More Services, Facilities & Things To Do On A Layover

ATMs / Cash Machines – Need cash? ATMs are available. Fees may apply, so check your bank’s fee schedule and daily withdrawal limit if you are travelling internationally. You may also want to notify your bank of your travel plans. Locations: on both levels.

Banking Services – There is a bank near the main entrance by the car rental desks; they may also assist with currency exchange.

Duty-Free & Shopping – Several shops sell clothing, souvenirs, travel accessories, books, alcohol, etc., both landside and airside. There is no designated duty-free store; however, many of the shops sell items that qualify for duty-free prices.

Food & Drink – There are a number of restaurants, cafes and bars located both landside and airside. At the time of writing, there were no 24-hour food options.

Information Desk – A tourist information booth is beside the car rental counter on the ground level.
