'Having just missed the Boat from Ancona to Patras in Greece, we were faced with no option but to wait the 24 odd hours until the next one. The port of Anconna is absolutely huge and is kept busy all day with departures. Unfortunately after the last boat, which was at approximately 10pm to Albania, the terminal building is closed. It was absolutely pouring down outside, so sleeping in the open was not an option. Covered areas are very limited, and the few hard metal benches that lie in the courtyard between the terminal and the check in area were already occupied by some homeless looking guys carrying their worldly belongings. A fast food restaurant opposite the building had a sealed canope outside which proved tempting, only to find that, after running accross through the rain it was comnpletely sealed and inaccessable. You may untie the ropes but, with the army doing constant rounds, such actions may lead to some trouble!
Next mad dash through the lashing pourdown was to the Ancona Maritima train station, just at the entrance of the port. This has a few benches, but they are extremely uncomfortable, and have these metal strands accross the middle of them, I presume to stop people sleeping on them.
Besides this the shelter didnt really provide dry cover as the wind was now blowing the rain in all directions. Much debating followed and having spotted some passenger trains lying empty on the tracks approaching the airport, we decided to risk it. (I dont recomend to anyone to try this).
Playing around with the automatic doors for a bit and "swoosh" welcome to the Train - Hotel Ancona. As luck would have it the first coach we entered was a first class one with compartments. After changing into dry clothes, we slept like babies undisturbed all night..."
