Dover Ferry Terminal

I actually got a great night's sleep - until we had to get up for the first bus at 4.45 am. Highly recommended if you're stranded in Dover! -Emily

"We arrived at Dover after a full day of travelling by train from a small Swiss village at the end of a month's Inter Rail trip, by now desperate to get home to London. Unfortunately, the last coach had left two hours earlier - as had the last train. We tried hitching a lift, but gave up after half an hour - it was past midnight, after all. We traipsed back into the terminal building - not very big, with booking desks all around, and got out our sleeping bags. The seats were surprisingly comfortable, and with no arm separators, we could really stretch out. No one batted an eyelid. There was hardly anyone around, and I actually got a great night's sleep - until we had to get up for the first bus at 4.45 am. Highly recommended if you're stranded in Dover!"

"I can't say I recommend it: everyone seems afraid that one of the other people is going to rob them, so everyone stays groggily awake. Since it was cold -- too cold for me to sleep if I had felt safe doing so -- I paced a lot. We took turns watching each others' bags. The worst part may have been the crowd of guys who'd gone to France for the day, and returned with mountains of duty-free beer; as they sobered up, they provided a constantly-changing and ever-ugly sight. Still, no one really rousted us if we tried sleeping; there was a lot of people who arrived after the last coach left, so we had plenty of company. I'd say it was pretty mediocre place to crash: marginally better than the *nasty* Venice hostel two weeks before, not as nice as, say, home."
