"I was making the most of my interrail pass and was told (after a difficult conversation on the border of France and Italy, in French, Italian, and English - definitely needed all three!) that if I got on the train after midnight (when my interrail pass started) I would only need to pay a small supplementary fare. After an afternoon wandering around in Geneva I ensure I was back at the train station before dark, as it was a pretty awful looking area for a young, solo female traveller who doesn't speak the language well - and I had put my bag into day storage so I needed it before the place closed.
I decided it was safer to stay at the train station and stay outside the guards office than walk to the station in the middle of the night. Unfortunately, several homeless people also thought staying around the guards office was a good idea too, but the guards moved them on. They didn't mind that I was sitting on the seats but sitting on the ground and steps around any Italian train station will usually get you moved on fairly quickly. After a few hours, some other travellers had appeared and were also getting connecting trains so I wasn't alone after about 11pm - thankfully. I wouldn't sleep here on my own again in a hurry, but if you must, definitely try and meet some people and stay near the guards office."
