My flight left at 7 am, but the last train to the airport was at 11 pm. It was snowing outside and having been at Leipzig Airport before, I dreaded it being freezing cold and drafty. (There are no doors on the stairs to the platform, so directly at the cafe near the elevator it is very cold.)
But I went further down the hall, away from the check-in counters and I found the place nicely heated. There was no need to break out my sleeping bag and iso-matress, the benches were comfy enough. Lights were dimmed to tolerable levels, and the occasional airport and airline employees were as interested in having an undetected quick nap at their counters as we backpackers in our seats.
It wasn't really possible to sleep, but when I covered my eyes with my jacket I managed to get a light nap in between 1am and 4 am. There were several other backpackers beside me also camping out on the benches. First flights left around 5am, so it got a bit more busy around then. Announcements started, and the check-in counters opened, so we all broke camp around 5:30 and headed for a cup of hot coffee at the airport bar and ran into those rested, more savvy/more loaded ones who had stayed at the nearby Airport Hotel."
