An en masse fight started in front of us, which made us drag all our baggage and children over the seats and back 4 rows. Security was called and responded with guns drawn. -Gord

"We arrived in Amsterdam unknowingly in the beginning of their Gay Pride festival. Hotels were impossible to get (they were available in the 1000/night category) and with four children we decided against staying in the Amsterdam train station. Since the ferry for England left from the Hoek at 7:00 AM the next day, we were facing a short night in any hotel even in the Hoek. We rode the train out and arrived about 9 PM with the idea of staying in that train station, there isn't one. We went to the ferry terminal and found it was closed and started to look around for a place to bunk down up against the walls. There was quite a bit of activity around the station parking lot and another look at the doors indicated that it opened at 11:00 PM. We thought we were saved when the terminal opened up and we dragged our luggage in with two others that had arrived with similar plans. They quickly found out they had taken the wrong train and were 50 kms by train from the ship port they should be at. The agent asked what we were doing there and we told her we were going to take the ferry to Harwich the next morning. She said that they opened the terminal for arrivals but not departures, it would open again at 6 AM. The mournful looks on our childrens faces drew some sympathy and we were allowed in until 1:30 but we could not fall asleep until 1:30 AM when she could check with the new shift of security as to whether we could stay the night. It was not the greatest deal but it was warmer in the terminal than outside. We sat patiently while the hours ticked by and a few of the younger ones fell asleep in makeshift props so they wouldn't be seen to be lying down. The seats are wide and are in 2s and 3s so you can easily stretch out. We sat in the front row near the gates so no one would forget about us. The ferry arrived late, closer to 2:30, it was undecided whether this was good giving us an extra hour in the warmth before being asked to leave or bad having to stay awake another hour. It turned out not to matter, a load of English Soccer hooligans came off the ferry. An en masse fight started in front of us, which made us drag all our baggage and children over the seats and back 4 rows. Security was called and responded with guns drawn. Several of the lot hadn't brought passports and others who made through the customs wandered around inebriated while the busses and trains outside refused to take the rabble aboard. The whole mess cleared up about 4 AM. We managed to lie down but there was no sleep. Cant recommend this one , although comfortable, the hours are poor and the clientele rascals."
