"As a young GI, I found out the German railway system shuts down at 1:00 am. I was still 1 1/2 hours away from my "home" station at Erlangen. I slept on the rail of an escalator with about 20 other GI's in various states of inebriation. No police bothered us and even though it was a brisk -10 c upstairs it was about 8 c down there. Plenty of space but on tile, chrome, or other hard places; no hassles with the police, and 4 tons of train makes a good alarm clock, provided you want up a 0500. "
