"Bloody purgatory. Bad weather in channel, sea-cat cancelled, had to take normal ferry. Arrived strasbourg at midnight rather than 7 pm and had to wait until 5.30 am next morning to get to the town I wanted to go next (Selestat). There are two waiting rooms, 2nd and 1st class... only allowed in 1st class with a 1st class ticket. 2nd class "lounge" horrid. Hard plastic moulded seats, very difficult to lie out. Room half full with others equally miserable. Not much heating, lights on all night, very loud CLOCK! Police/railway staff in and out all night chucking out tramps/hobos/homeless... how they can tell who is what I dunno 'cos they never hassled me and never seemingly asked for tickets. Security - I guess reasonably Ok due to staff/police wanderings, but not high.. I wrapped my back-pack straps around a seat stanchion but of course a stanley knife makes short work of that. Don't recall it being cold specifically. Not easy to sleep... I managed maybe at best a 40 minute section. Wouldn't want to repeat it."

"The train station in Strasbourg, France is a good place to sleep. I was trying to sleep in the station in Colmar (about 125 km south of Strasbourg, but they closed the station at 1 or 2 in the morning. So I caught the next train to Strasbourg (filled with backpackers on the Venice-Paris train). When I got to the station in Strasbourg, the whole station was filled with backpackers sleeping on the floor. Lined up one right after the other. At 6:30 or so a station employee would come around and gently nudge us letting us know that the it was about to 'open' for business. Nothing harsh about our wake up, just a gentle "Good Morning, Monsieur." It was a nice enough place that I spent the next night too. Same thing, people lined up one right after the other"
