Upon arrival, my friend and I couldn't find a place to stay, so we decided to sleep at the train station. There were already other backpackers sleeping on the floor, in their sleepingbags, in front of an inside coffee shop, in a corner. It was difficult to find a secluded corner to settle down in, because most of them were either windows to shops, or narrow corridors. Around midnight security came, and they were concerned about us sleeping there. We said we missed our train, and the next one was leaving early. They let us stay, but set the condition, that we could only sleep on the floor till 4 a.m., because after that the trains will start comeing in, and we would disturb the people. So we slept on the floor till then, and then we moved to the unconfortable benches in the main lobby. I couldn't really sleep after that, so instead I observed the other group, who didn't bother getting up, and they weren't even bothered after that. I don't know what their deal was, because they were italian and negotiated with security much more vehemently. We couldn't really, because they didn't speak much english, so there was a language barrier.

To sum it up: if you try sleeping at the Trieste train station, have a train and location ready, as an excuse for staying there, and try staying on the floor until they come and tell you to get up now, because they might not really bother to come again. No good secluded places though, so once trains start arriving, people will stare.
