Venice Airport

Lasting Impressions....
"To top it off somebody had thrown out an half eaten pizza so I had dinner thrown in." (b willett)
"The police woke me from my half sleep no fewer than three times to check my passport and tickets. I should add that two of the times I was woken was by the same pair of policemen. " (DAMO)

Good times

Decided to sleep in the Venice airport prior to returning to the US since my flight was at 6:20am. We were the last folks in at around 1 am but were still able to stake out a row of chairs without armrests. The chairs were metal and kind of uncomfortable, but I had a blanket which I used as a pillow. It was bright but I had eyeshades for that. The machines they cleaned the floor with were pretty loud though. But there were plenty of people sleeping there and no one was bothered. Ticket counters opened at around 5 am, so all in all not bad way to kill a few hours if you arrive before 1 am."

Not a bad place, but not great either

"My arrival by train was later in the evening. It was pouring down rain. I didn't have hotel reservations and didn't want to take a cab to find a hotel. Besides my departure time was so early I'd have to leave the hotel, again by cab, at 4 a.m. I decided to stay at the airport. There were a couple other people staying the night so I didn't feel out of place, nor was I threatened or harrassed. The floor is indeed hard and cold and the rainy weather didn't help. The lights were turned down but not off. Maintenance crews were working on something most of the night so there was a bit of background noise. The seating is all preformed metal benches some with & some without permanent arm rests. I managed to find a 3-seat 'bench' so I could stretch out a bit. My backpack served as a pillow and I felt more secure about having it under my head. However, my dampish sweater didn't do much as a blanket. Over all I think I slept for an hour, maybe two, in bits & pieces. If I absolutely had to sleep there again I could do it."
Um, you may want to rethink sleeping in this place

This is a horrible airport to sleep in! I had to arrive around midnight on the last bus out of Venice and couldn't check in until around 4:30 when my airline's counter opened.
First of all, the airport closes so it's like a creepy ghost town in there. There are restaurants open, so bring your own food if you think you'll be hungry. The lights are dim and there is little info or helpful directional signage. I saw a couple ask several airport authorities where a certain check in desk was and they dismissed them without a care.
There is no carpet or cushiony chairs. There are hard, cold metal chairs with arm rests. There are a few that don't have arm rests so you can stretch out if you're lucky.
In the middle of the night, a team of security guards came and looked at my passport and flight info. Word to the wise: they will give you a hard time if you don't have a print off of an e-ticket or other documentation that you're flying out of there. An officer came over to me, woke me up and took over ten minutes looking at my passport, international student ID and e-ticket.
It was also FREEZING. I think they turn down the heat at night and the metal benches don't help.
