I flew through Zvartnots Airport several times. The main building, where bags are checked has interesting architecture- like a spaceship with granite floors. Most air traffic to and from Europe occurs late at night and the airport is well equipped to handle it. The new terminal has 'chez lounge'-style seats, very comfortable for sleeping. Newspaper kiosks, cafes, restaurants and even a pharmacy are open 24 hrs. While there order Armenian coffee- the best! The duty-free (open 24hrs) offers good cigars, local cigarettes and Armenian cognac and wine- reasonably priced. Airport staff are very competent and fluent in European languages. Unlike some Western airports (e.g. Vienna) you don't have to worry about mislabeled luggage that will land in the wrong country. If you are bored, Yerevan Downtown is only 35 min away and you can get the visa easily. The only drawback is the air tax required by the government (~50)-but the magnificent view of snow-covered Mount Ararat on takeoff makes it all worthwhile .

so, just how bad is this airport?
