Bring cash for shakedowns; dirty and hot transit lounge

by web-administrator (January, 2017)

(Guest Review) The two US passport holders on my Arik Air flight from Accra, myself included, were pulled aside by the immigration and customs people, our passports were taken and we were told we would have to spend the night in the hot, dirty transit lounge that had only hard plastic chairs. After paying the requested, 'something for the weekend, madam,' from the immigration officer, I was taken to Forex to change dollars for naira and paid 7,500ng (20) each for both of us to stay in the air-conditioned Priority Pass lounge overnight (half the price quoted in dollars). Although we'd only checked into the lounge at midnight, we were kicked out of the lounge at daybreak (6am) and told to pay another 20 if we wanted to stay there during the day. The lounge 'concierge' told me there was only one towel available (not one for each of us--I expect this was another shakedown), there was no soap and the food was cold, greasy microwaved samosas of questionable sanitation. Because of repeated flight cancellations, I stayed (and paid) for two more days and another night in the dirty Priority Pass lounge. the rest of the terminal is also dirty and one of the public bathrooms had a sewage overflow while I was there. Another public bathroom appeared clean enough. I will NEVER fly through this airport again, no matter what crazy routing I must take to get to my work destinations in Africa.

The most terrible airport on this world

(Guest Review) Every offical ask you for money. Don't tell them you have cash, otherwise, the custom offical will take you to the dark room. But if you give the money to the Nigerian Offical, you can bring anything on to the plane.

Lagos Airport Review

(Guest Review) Always an experience flying to and from Lagos. In an attempt to make things efficient, it has been made increasingly inefficient (refer to the recent upgrade of immigration area). Rare to have aircon and jumped on by everyone trying to offer you cars as you pass immigration. Gates change at short notice with no announcement, screens are not updated. You just follow people and hope you end up on the correct flight. Flying out security seem to make up rules on the spot regarding what can and cannot be taken on a plane in hand luggage. I have had the most random items confiscated / nearly confiscated due to being a 'choking hazard'. Hair straighteners (I managed to take these through after 15 mins of insisting they are not). Mosquito repellent... Assume they just want me to give them Naira to keep the items. You will wait 2 hours for baggage at times. Road area outside is a clusterf**k when trying to get to your driver to get out. You laugh from beginning to end! Lagos is not short of entertainment. Heineken Bar is great in departures, comfortable and attentive staff, at least you can drink to make the experience more amusing.

(Guest Review) On every counter, there is somebody ready to ask for a bribe, be it immigration, security check or boarding. Security check at the check in counters is manual and you whisk any thing from huge amounts of alcohol to local artefacts for less than 500 Naira (Local Currency, approx 2.5 US dollars).

Lagos Airport Review

(Guest Review) I don't like having to sleep in mosquito netting. This is malaria country, the bad kind of malaria, falsiparum, and the airport doors are left open all night, letting mosquitoes in. No air conditioning, and it was oppressively hot. Club sandwich I bought at this airport had been out in the heat for hours, not refrigerated, and gave me food poisoning. Women's restroom had standing water on the floor and was dirty. None of the locks on the restroom doors worked. And you have to pack your own toilet paper or buy some from women who sell it to make a buck. Customs officers ask for bribes, which gives me the creeps.

(Guest Review) There should be Air Conditioning... This is hot Africa, near the Equator. Restrooms should have doors that lock. One should not have to sleep in Mosquito Netting in order not to get malaria. Club sandwiches for sale should be refrigerated. Food poisoning is not a good experience.

Mosquito Nets & No Toilet Paper

by AirportLoungeLizard (March, 2016)

Reason for Stay: Other
Where: Landside
Pros: They have a small post office where I was able to buy some souvenir stamps
Cons: An ugly place... No Air Conditioning. Dirty Restrooms.

Don't ever travel with dawdlers. If your travel companion makes you late to the airport, you could be in for 2 nights of extreme airport suffering plus 400.00 charges each, in addition to the ticket price you already paid, for an airport change fee. Airport has no toilet paper-- you pack your own to the restrooms or pay someone standing by with toilet paper for sale. The Women's restroom had standing water on the floors that my long dress swept in... And the airport's restroom doors do not lock but hang open. A worker did tell me of a cleaner restroom than the one I had been going to, which I appreciated, and a worker in that restroom told me I was pretty, which helped my spirits. The doors to the airport are open all night, letting malaria-causing mosquitoes in. I slept in my mosquito netting outfit and was terrified. I was starving so purchased a questionable club sandwich at the only restaurant stand which was open, and it tasted terrible, rotten. I was suspicious of it from the start, as it was not refrigerated. When I bought it the cashier said, 'Oh, we just turned off the lights, or I would have heated it for you.' I noticed its unpurchased companion was still out in the hot African heat the following evening. No wonder I got food poisoning! Nowhere to buy real coffee in this airport-- all they had was the Nescafe crappy Instant with chunks of floating instant milk powder atop it. Yuck. We heard that the contractor hired to renovate this airport, Murtala Muhammed International, had promised to put in air conditioning, but skipped out without doing so. It was unbearably hot and humid and oppressive the whole 2 days we were stuck there, in the high 90s the whole time. continued >>

Improving standards at Murtala Muhammad International Airport

(Guest Review by Abdul) My past experiences in this airport were unruly ( eg. lots of crowds, no ACs, inefficient or non working facilities) but from my recent experiences in this airport I can tell you that a lot is being done to uplift the airport like complete remodeling of the security area and arrivals hall, and hopefully by 2020, this airport will be able to come up to the international standards expected of it. Also if on the rare occasion you happen to find yourself stuck in this airport, I advise you to make your way over to the domestic hall for any chance of sleep at all.

Lagos International Airport is the worst!

(Guest Review by BusinessTrip) From the arriving to departure all you will hear is 'chop chop!' If they want investors and foreign people to visit their country they need to discipline their employees and cut this 'chop chop' thing! Chop chop is their term for asking money. It is so dissapointing!

Lagos Airport Review

(Guest Review) Very disorganised. Very inefficient. NO A/C although it looks like these are being installed. Can be described as Organised Chaos. The SAA lounge is dismally basic. the actual boarding of the plane was a disaster. they only realised after re-checking half of the passengers bags, that he plane was not at that gate. We ended up walking around the terminal building to get o the plane.

Acceptable (African standard)

by vesper (August, 2013)

Reason for Stay: Other
Where: Landside
Pros: Nice and clean toilets, good security
Cons: no restaurants during the night, no internet

- airport staff and policemen are quite helpful and friendly (during night - this doesn't apply during the daytime due to heavy bunches of people trying to get into the airport) - the only airport restaurant closes at 10 pm - snack machines do not work (just take money and do not dispense anything) - no wifi - the only internet cafe is extremely overpriced and is good just to print completely necessary documents if needed

Never ending construction

by ladytraveller (May, 2012)

Reason for Stay: Connection between flights
Where: Landside and Airside
Pros: slight improvement in the departures terminal
Cons: never -ending construction

my first experience with the Lagos airport was in 2007 and renovations had been underway and in 2012 construction is still in place . The airport is dusty and noisy there are noticeable improvements but overall the airport still not up to scratch .No seating landside and airside plenty of seating but construction dust make them unusable. Improved bathroom with visibly expensive fittings but no toilet paper. Making domestic connections is a nightmare you need to get to the another airport so use an airline that offers shuttle services. I would not even attempt to sleep in the airport.

(Contributed by ?) - "I visited Lagos Murtula Mohammed International Airport recently flying in from a regional destination and flying out a couple of days later back to Europe. The airport has improved enormously and is tolerable in itself. However as with the rest of Lagos any travellers primary fears should be towards personal security with Taxi travel to and from the city. Taxi's are a serious problem - and some 80 percent of violect crime perpetrated against foreigners occurs in Taxis. My advice would be to either have a local friend collect you or to ask a Nigerian official to help you find a cab. Once found, make sure you take down the taxi numbers, and number plate and leave with official at airport. Make sure the taxi driver knows you have done this - as then he/she will know they can be caught should they try anything, as carrying guns and knives is very common." Added 30 July 2006
