Not a bad experience

by Cutty (October, 2012)

Where: Landside and Airside
Pros: Pretty orderly, restaurant, good coffee shop, duty free shopping, showers
Cons: As in much of Uganda, good idea to carry some toilet paper

I've been through it 7 or 8 times since '08. Not a bad airport at all. Can be a hassle getting there from Kampala, during frequent rush hours, but that's not really the airport's fault. A pretty good restaurant and bar. A coffee shop operated by Good African Coffee, which is great. Pretty good range of duty free shopping with several shops. No airline-affiliated clubs, but an independent one there you can access for around 30 bucks, and worth it. Lines could be long but were orderly at check-in. The only mob scenes were boarding the plane. Immigration line can be long, but I've never waited longer than 40 minutes; try that at Heathrow.

Staff woke me whenever a plane left for somewhere they vaguely expected I was going, not too often and pretty useful. Chairs in dept lounge are massive and comfy - try to blag your way in early if you can for a luxurious night..." (Added 18 JAN 03)

(Contributed by Robert Hayes) PROS - "It has been refurbished in the last three years. It is 1000 better than when I first visited in 1992. Clean, well guarded, place to eat, duty free goods, international phones, not much to do but then no one has reason to layover there too long. Used by US Military as staging point to help Ruwandan relief effort. Old terminal raided by Israeli troops in the 70's to rescue hijacked airliner."

(Contributed by ?) - "I was there in May 1998. Get there early to get your boarding pass because there's lots of pushing and shoving. But as far as African airports go, it's not that bad. There's lots of windows to see who you are trying to meet, and getting through customs isn't bad, unless the customs people are having a bad day. Hang on to your bags, and don't put your money in your back pocket. I wouldn't recommend sleeping. There's one restaurant where you can buy stale chips and soda."
