Dhaka Airport Review

(Guest Review) If we had ignored advice to get to the airport early because of the hartal and possible disruptions to taxis, all would have been fine. However, we listened and had to spend 8 hours on the landside of the airport. Dhaka Airport was clean but poorly policed, particularly in comparison to the city. Toilets were clean, but mosquitoes were everywhere. Snack food was expensive and limited. Well dressed men with seemingly genuine IDs offered to assist us. Same thing happened when we came into the country: seems officials try to supplement their income by 'helping' European visitors. Immigration was fast and courteous. Security was cursory. Airside was comfortable and offered food! Dhaka Airport is not Changi but it works. Accept you are in Bangladesh and enjoy the experience, with caution.

Not as bad as it could be

Reason for Stay: Weather/airline delay
Where: Landside and Airside
Pros: people watching, decent bar, friendly staff
Cons: you'll have to bride someone at some point

I lived in Dhaka for four years and traveled in and out of the country quite a bit. Because of frequent flight delays, I have spent quite a bit of time camping out, both by myself and with large groups of people. There is a Sheridan run bar upstairs. It's smokey a lot of the time, and overpriced, but it beats hanging out downstairs with the teeming hordes of Bangladeshi 'guest workers' in matching baseball hats, who are on their way to Dubai or some other Middle Eastern country. As a female, I found being surrounded by the men, many of whom had clearly never seen a Caucasian woman up close, to be, not threatening, but very uncomfortable. The Sheridan bar, on the other hand, is quiet, and has a really good bathroom, complete with a shower. (I've never taken a shower there though, so I have no idea how it is). The rest of upstairs is continued >>

Dhaka airport has been improving over the last 3 years I have known it. I agree with a previous reviwer that the upstairs transit area is the best area and completely different from the usual Asian chaos below. Firstly, if you head upstairs and towards the northern (right-hand facing the runway) there is the Sheraton (outpost) that will give you good food and booze (at a price, approx 7 a can of beer). You can spend as long as you want here. Head just a little bit south (left along the runway) and it is completely deserted. Surely enough to spread out and catch a few z's. Or for a quiet chunder.

The best ten bucks I ever spent

Reason for Stay: Connection between flights
Where: Landside and Airside

Zia International is filthy but it is five star compared to what it used to be like. Expect delays, they are a way of life, as is the country's endemic corruption. A well-placed bribe will get you into the business class lounge, which is clean, has good food and is very comfortable. Enjoy your time there while you wait for your flight.

Reason for Stay: Other

I arrived at Dhaka in 1994 with my wife,my friend and his wife.We were due to stay at a hotel until the next morning to catch a connecting flight, but were told we could not leave the airport as there had been several murders just outside(no joke). anyway the "authorities"at the airport took all our passports off us,and we "settled" down for the night. The place was a sess pit, with dirty floors and peeling paint on the filthy walls, and scraggy cats roaming about..I decided to have a look at the goodies they had for sale in the airport shop.I say shop, but infact it was a 10ft by 4ft glass case, consisting of milk and cigarettes and nothing else. The stand up ashtrays dotted about the place were not being used for cigarette ends as you might think,NO,they were being used to collect spit, from around 40 men(I stopped counting after that)who every continued >>
