A few airport reviews from the archives

A small airport with expanding aspirations. The counters are numerous and relitively well orginized. Once that and the security checks are passed the duty free area is on the first floor. that is acceptable there are a few eatery outlets which are standard perhaps needing more refurbishment.

The new extension departure hall is a single large longitudinal hall of 2 floors where gates are located below. The hall is large and there are many seating areas (with arm rests)that are usually empty given the relatively low traffic - except at weekend peaks at about 9pm-2am. The grounds are carpeted and area quite.

Although I didn't sleep there I would assume it would be a possible good choice (perhaps near the Subway/DunkinDonut outlets at the end of the hall). I don't remember seeing many officials wondering around and thus perhaps no one to wake you up!

We spent five hours at Muscat airport in the middle of the night on two separate nights waiting for our flight connection on the way out to our destination and on the return trip.

On the first night we could hardly sleep at all due to hard chairs with immovable armrests, freezing cold air conditioning and loud announcements. The floor is hard marble. So don't expect to be able to lie down anywhere unless you bring your own sleeping mat.

The only place that was comfortable was Costa Coffee which had some softer chairs and two sofas - my tip would be to get there fast and bag a sofa. We weren't quick enough the first time round!

On the way back we paid a fee to use the premium class lounge, which was much better, but is subjectt to availability and is obviously not free!

"Don't even think about trying to sleep in Muscat Airport. Hard chairs all over the place, lots of guards to kick you out and even more pick-pockets to take all your stuff. Take a cab into town and stay at a cheap hotel on Muttrah seafront instead. Worth the hassle."
