For Spring Break 2005, I decided, on a whim, to purchase a 10-day Greyhound bus pass and travel around eastern Canada. After noting my pass was also valid for the eastern US, I found myself in New York City. My plan was to take the late bus back to Montreal, arriving the next morning, in time for a connection to Quebec City. However, between the cold weather, being just under 21 and having little cash to my name, I started to get bored with the city, so I decided to take a slightly earlier bus back to Montreal, arriving around 2am. I figured arriving early in Montreal and sleeping in Central Station was preferable to wandering around Manhatten and Port Authority Bus Station after dark.

The bus was the last arrival of the night, and I found myself in the terminal with a few other late-arrivals, a security guard and a cleaner. All of the benches in our section of the terminal had armrests - the section with proper wire benches was roped off for the night. I did manage to get a an hour or two of sleep in before hunger took precedence. Once I grabbed some food, it was time for my 6am connection to Quebec City.

The staff was fairly good. They took care not to wake anyone who was sleeping, and the security guard was nice enough to direct me to a nearby convenience store. Announcements for airport shuttles began at around 4AM, but the volume was low enough to sleep through. Good thing, because they came every 15 minutes or so.

Aside from the lack of benches, the only other annoyance was the doorbell system for night access. Anyone coming in would have to ring the bell, at which time the guard would open the door and ask to see an ongoing ticket. However, the added security factor is definately a plus.

Overall, this probably isn't the best place to spend a night in Montreal, but it's warm, safe and the price is right. I would probably spend the night there again during similar circumstances, but for stays longer then a few hours or so, or if you're planning in advance, drop the money and spend the night at a nearby hostel."
