My flight from BNE was delayed, I got in at 4 a.m. and had a 7 a.m. outbound flight to Santo. There may be some potential for sleeping in the downstairs area of the International terminal - there were semi-padded bench/bucket seats. Oh, and even though it was 3 a.m. when I got in, they had the band playing in the arrivals hall whilst you were waiting for immigration/customs. If you sleep outside, this will not bother you.
I wandered over to the domestic terminal, it was basically deserted, but neither terminal "closed" by the looks of things.
The lights are on & there is a really loud tv in the domestic terminal. There were occasional workers, but I didn't feel threatened or scared ever. The seats in the domestic terminal are plastic. You could sleep there... but if I were to seriously do it again, I would go back to the International terminal downstairs.
The other thing to consider is that I was originally supposed to arrive around 11 or 12 at nite and go to a hotel for 6 hrs or so. The hotel was supposed to be "decent" - I do trust my travel agent, she knows my taste. The hotel was 61AUD for the nite, including transfers. So, think about it... If I had it to do over, I'd really have to think about it, although the cheapskate... er... thrifty in me would consider sleeping at the airport... but for 61 including transfers for a bed... hmmmmmm...
