"did an all nighter at hartford's union station bus/ train station. The good news is that it is open all night (and there's no other non-airport public place in new england that is, except south station in boston: worcester & springfield bus stations close at night) The bad news is that this is really the pits (and I'm not particularly fussy and find sacking out at NYC Port Authority pleasurable...) Big drawback is those special Hartford benches, never saw anything like these before: very hard wood,and specially curved so that you will roll off them if you doze off. Big signs everywhere "No sleeping". There's also a security guard who will want to hear your story about why you are here all night (he didn't need to see my ticket, but you need to tell him you're on the first bus in the morning for worcester or something). He will doze off around 1 AM then you can find a way to stretch out on the bench...
the real drawback is that the mens' toilet is locked from 10 PM to 6 AM (ladies was open all night though). There is also some street life that seeps into the place in the late hours, so you will need to keep an eye on your bags when the security cop is dozing.
