"I had been planning for 2 years to go to a 5-day convention in Philadelphia the immediately after Christmas. On the afternoon of Christmas, a major ice storm rips through the south, shutting down airports at DFW, XNA, LIT, TXK, SHV, and MEM. All flights on the 26th are cancelled, and I'm still grounded at home in Little Rock. On the 27th, a couple of late morning and early afternoon flights are moving, but the airline doesn't have any availible flights left for the rest of the day.
I rack my brain to figure out a way to get at the front of the line for standby and not have to drive before the roads freeze over at night. I convince my parents to drive me to the airport that afternoon and let me sleep there overnight. This was before September 11th, so you could go through checkpoint without a boarding pass, but Security would clear out the gates each night. I and one other soul found a bench immediately before the checkpoint in front of the Terminal Restaurant. The bench was wide and padded (although too short for me). I kept waking up about every half hour to a recording echoing from baggage claim about "Welcome to Little Rock".
