"We had a long layover in Moline due to some storms that were moving across the Great Plains.
Moline was pretty empty at the time. There wasn't much for food except an overpriced sandwich/coffee stand and a sit-down cafeteria. There are benches with the traditional fixed armrests, and a wide variety of empty areas with no seating or items of any kind. There are also stray plugs lying around if you need to charge up an electronic item or two. There's a free airport wireless service but you practically have to sit on the transmitter to get any sort of signal, so forget that.
I settled down with a travel pillow and blanket, ready to catch some zzs before the fight. It was quiet and the light wasn't too bad, due in part to the cloudy weather outside. Ah, and then the PA system crackled to life!
The staff at Moline simply cannot resist the lure of the PA system, and they spend all day on it jawing like truckers with a CB radio. Tardy passengers received a "flight is boarding" page, followed by a parade of second, third, fourth, and fifth warnings to please come down and board the plane. A gate attendant hawked a couple of business class seats; then some fool actually bought one, and the announcements resumed with double the intensity. Another gate attendant used the PA system to warn about a possible tripping hazard in one of the Gate ramps. Not just the folks boarding that plane, mind you, but the entire airport, including those of us trying to nap and quite possibly even the guys out manning the taxi stand.
All of these announcements competed with the stern messages coming from the baggage claim area, which issued reminders that any luggage not picked up immediately from the conveyor belt would be locked up in the storage room and boy, would you be sorry then mister!
Needless to say, it was only a matter of minutes before another useless item would go out for broadcast and jar my eyelids open; I eventually gave up and spent the hours in a corner, reading and scowling."
