I was riding the train around the USA once. I got to the NOL train station around 5pm and was supposed to depart for FLL at 10pm. The train was late and didn't even come in until about 7am the next morning when a bright new day was dawning.
There were a couple of cops (city cops not security guards) in the station all night on constant patrol. Anyone who came in (homeless or no) and even approached anyone to bug them or ask for money was immediately removed by the police. The doors were locked after midnight or so as well. There wasn't much to do in there, and it was posted in the bathroom that it is against city law to clean yourself in there (honest). There was a MS. PAC MAN console that only cost a quarter to play, which was quite entertaining. If I remember correctly there were vending machines, but I had food with me so it didn't matter.
I ended up meeting a guy from Singapore and also a lady and her son from England that night. The mother seemed quite glad because her kid was very interested in talking about cell phone technology, which she was not interested in in the least. Since cell phone tech is one of my hobbies and areas of expertise, I was able to relieve her of the burden for quite a long time. "

"Slept over in railroad station in New Orleans, and it was a big mistake. Quite dangerous, with homeless people sleeping right outside and located in rough neighborhood. All alone in a big hall (whatever happened to everyone else?), and the solitary security guard at the other side of hall seemed to take lots of breaks and hardly around. Plastic seats made sleeping comfortably impossible."
