New York City Bus Stations

Lasting Impressions....

"I look up to see an NYPD officer holding a sub-machine gun standing over me. He explained (not quite as nicely as I will phrase it here) that when I sit on the floor and close my eyes is when the thieves start circling, and that I should get my ass up and move on so that he doesn't have to fill out paperwork when I get robbed (he said he hated paperwork)." (Patrick)

"I was greeted to the horrific sight of a presumably homeless man who had dropped his drawers and was washing his ass in the sink. " (R)

"I arrived in NY after a bus ride from Pittsburgh around 2am. My bus to CT didn't leave until 6am the next morning so I spent a few hours nervously bumming around the station. Had no need to be nervous though! The bus station closes down between these hours so only those with valid tickets are allowed to stay. No homeless, no druggies. It is quite busy, lots of people sleeping and hanging around, but I didn't feel unsafe and it was quite comfortable considering. No problems."

I've arrived to JFK and I was waiting for a friend to pick me up. I was waiting for more than 2 hours, I've spent 25 on phone in order to find out that I can no longer call him a friend. So I took the shuttle to Port Authority, planning to take Greyhound to Ocean City, Maryland. I arrived 4 minutes after the last bus to OC left. It was 11 PM. I purchased a ticket for the morning bus and left the station to see Manhattan... with my 85 pound backpack. I resisted 1 hour, mostly asking for a hostel. Finally I went back to Port Authority. Most of the doors closed or blocked by policemen. I was lucky I bought the ticket, so they let me in. There are several free Internet terminals, I've checked my mail, bought some food and a National Geographic and I started to look for a place to sleep. There are some armchairs in the waiting area, but very uncomfortable. The floor was pretty clean, so I collected some New York Times from the tables, put them down in a corner, next to the heater, tied my backpacks to my arms and I had more than 6 hours of continuous, refreshing sleep! That's all folks, have fun."
