"Sacramento (SMF) is a pretty good regional airport. There are two terminals: 'A' and 'B'. A is newer and is much nicer; it is the hub for Southwest Airlines. It features a new food court with lots of options, a couple of coffee places, and even a wine bar. There is an area down at the end (by the smoothies) that has an outlet bar for laptops.
B (Alaska, Continental) is older and features many fewer amenities; there is only a coffee place and an overpriced restaurant. If you are stuck for a long while, you can easily go out and walk between terminals. There is free wifi in the entire airport. There are not many comfortable places to sit/sleep however. They are in the process of building a new terminal B, so the whole airport will be upgraded in the next year or two.
Security lines are usually short/fast; checkin lines are usually short except early in the morning (for the 6am flights). Transit options include taxis, shuttle companies, and a public bus (the 42A/42B) which stops on the hour to go to Davis/Sacramento. While it is possible to go to SF from here, it's about a two hour trip and involves driving or getting to the Amtrak station, no direct connection. It's quick to leave the airport unless you've checked luggage; the baggage handlers seem to take forever. This may be improving recently.
All in all I prefer flying out of Sacramento to other area airports when possible - quick in & out. "
