Got into DC's Union Station at 1:30 AM and had to wait until the Metro started running again at 5:50 to Reagan Airport. There were a bunch of empty benches with no armrests so there were several of us sleeping in the Amtrak waiting area. The cops came around at one point and asked to see my Amtrak ticket stub. I showed it to them and told them I was waiting for the Metro to start running again and they let me sleep for the next few hours. Surprisingly comfortable and convenient! There were a few homeless people but they got moved along quickly.

Good luck sleeping here! There are a few benches without armrests but as soon as you lie down on one the rent-a-cops come and yell at you to get up. If you can sleep sitting up it is quite safe and very quiet after about 11pm (the no-laying-down policy is to keep the homeless out. It seems to work.) There are a few vending machines where you can get a soda or something but all the restaurants are closed by 11pm."
