What to Expect

The passenger terminal at Sendai Airport (code: SDJ) is separated into International and Domestic areas. Amenities include a dozen eateries, a variety of shops including duty-free, pay-to-use massage chairs, and an exercise facility with showers. WiFi is free for two one-hour session per person. Economy class passengers can pay to enter two airport lounges. See Airport Lounges in the guide below for location and access information.

Sleeping in Sendai Airport

The airport closes nightly, from 9:30PM until 6:10AM, so overnight stays are not possible. For uninterrupted sleep, hotels are nearby. See our Airport Hotels section below for more info or read some traveller airport reviews for more tips.

In this guide we may refer to locations as “landside” and “airside”. Landside is the public area of the terminal located in the non-secure zone, before security. Pay-per-use, Single Visit Passes & Lounge Memberships

Regardless of what class of service you are flying, there is a lounge that you can enter by paying at the door:

  • Business Lounge (East Side) – Location: Airside, 3rd Floor. Hours: 8:30AM – 7:30PM. Lounge Access: Pay at the Door (1,080 yen for 1 hour)
  • Business Lounge (West Side) – Location: Landside, 1st Floor. Hours: 8:30AM – 7:30PM. Lounge Access: Pay at the Door (1,080 yen for 1 hour).

Airline Lounges

If you are a First or Business Class traveller you may have access to the lounges listed below. For more information, check the airline’s web site.

  • Japan Airlines Sakura Lounge – Location: Airside, 2nd Floor, near Gate 6.
  • ANA Signet – Location: Airside, 2nd Floor, near Gate 5.

Free WiFi is available in a maximum of two 1-hour sessions per user. Connect to the “00-FREE_Wi-Fi_Sendai_Airport” network. WiFi is also accessible in the UCC Cafe Express Store (Softbank Free Wi-Fi) or from the Business Lounge (paid access).

ATMs / Cash Machines – Need cash? ATMs are available. Fees may apply, so be sure to check your bank’s fee schedule and your daily withdrawal limit if you are travelling internationally. You may also want to notify your bank of your travel plans. Locations: in the Domestic and International Arrivals lobbies. Operating hours vary but there are no 24 hour ATMs.

Baby Care Facilities – Changing tables, sink, and privacy for feeding are available in the Nursing Rooms. Location: International Arrival Lobby, 1st Floor • 1F Nursery Room • Domestic Boarding Area, 2nd Floor • International Boarding Area, 2nd Floor. Hours: 6:30AM – 9:30PM.

Changing Rooms – Locations: International and Domestic Airline Counters, 2nd Floor (for women) • International and Domestic Arrival Lobbies, 1st Floor (for men and women).

Currency Exchange – 77 Bank provides full-service banking and currency exchange services.Location: International Arrival Lobby, 1st Floor. Hours: 9:00AM – 3:00PM (teller window) or 9:00AM – 8:00PM (foreign currency ATM).

Drinking Water – Thirsty? There are water fountains where you can refill your water bottles. 2 can be found on the 1st Floor and 5 are available on the 2nd Floor.

Duty Free & Shopping – Duty-free shopping is available on the 2nd Floor, along with a variety of souvenir and retail stores. A convenience market is located on the 1st Floor (Hours:6:30AM – 9:30PM).

Fitness – Keep active before your flight. The Runners Port is a place to change your clothes for a run/walk/etc., somewhere to store your clothing while you exercise and to freshen up with a shower afterwards. Location: 1st Floor, Landside. Hours: 7:00AM – 9:00PM. Rates: ¥ 800 /person.

Food & Drinks – Food concessions throughout the airport operate with varying schedules with many open 6:20AM – last flight. At the time of this update, there are no 24-hour dining options. Vending machines are available in the airport.

Information Desk – Have any questions? Visit the airport information center for more assistance! Location: 1st floor, landside. Hours: 6:30AM – 9:15PM.

Luggage Storage & Lockers – The airport offers a variety of locker sizes to accommodate items such as a small bag up to a bicycle. The coin-operated lockers range in price from ¥ 300 to ¥ 800 for the first 12 hours. Only coins are accepted but you will find money changers at most of the locker locations. Location: Both ends of the 1st and 2nd floors.

Massage – Coin-operated massage chairs are available. Fee: ¥ 200 for 10 minutes. Location: International Plaza, 2nd Floor.

Medical Services – There are five Automated External Defibrillators (AED). Locations: 1F, next to Daily Yamazaki • 2F between Date Marche and the escalator • 2F, near A3 • 2F near Duty free • 3F, Center of Plaza. If you are feeling unwell and need a place to lay down, there is a rest room available with beds. Location: 1st Floor, Landside.

Mobile Charging – There a few options:

  • Paid – 30 minutes for ¥ 100. Locations: Domestic Boarding area, 2nd Floor • Domestic Check-In counter (west side), 2nd Floor • International Check-In counter (east side), 2nd Floor • opposite the Royal Coffee Shop, 3rd Floor.
  • Free – There are 30 free charging spots (including a chair and privacy divider at each charging spot) on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd floors.

Museum – Sendai Airport Museum is located on the 3rd Floor.

Observation Deck – Relax and watch planes taking off and landing from the vantage point of the airport’s observation deck. The “Smile Terrace” is accessible by stairs or dedicated elevator.

Pharmacy – Drugstore Yoneki Jujido. Location: Landside, 2nd Floor. 6:45AM – 8:00PM.

Post Office – Drop off your last minute postcards to friends and family from airport’s mailbox. Location: outside of exit 1 of the Domestic Arrivals.

Buses

Subway

Sendai Airport and JR Sendai Station are connected by an airport rail link service called the “Sendai Airport Access Line”. This is a cheaper, faster option than many of the airport buses. For rates, routes and schedules, visit the Sendai Airport website.

Taxis

Taxis are readily available for hire at the taxi stand on 1F. At the time of this update, a one-way journey between the airport and JR Sendai Station is ¥ 5,860 and takes about 35 minutes.
