Get through charming Hilo Airport FAST

Pros: Quick and easy to navigate - has jetways (great when it rains)

Cons: not much to do after TSA security

Every visitor to the Big Island of Hawai'i should spend some time on Hilo-side. So green, so beautiful! And arriving or departing in Hilo is a breeze – even compared to always busy Kona on the other side of the island. Hilo is a small airport – now even smaller because half of the facility is closed down. This means that it is really easy to navigate. It's clean. Curbside pick up is a breeze. You can just walk over to the car rental booths (no shuttling with all of your bags!). People are friendly and laid back. For me, Hilo is a great place to arrive and take off from. There is one so-so restaurant landside (before TSA) and another in the waiting area – also nothing to write home about, but there is food and drink inside, contrary to the original SIA description. Also soda vending machines. And, arguably the most comfortable seating EVER in an airport. I would love to have those deep-cushioned chairs in my home. The gift shop is very nice – cd's, clothing, t-shirts, small gifts, toys. So don't be afraid to arrive for a direct to US mainland or international flight a little early, even if there is "not a lot to do after security". Here's why: Several hundred people tend to show up at the same time for check-in/bag drop for an international flight, even if it's via Honolulu. It's a small airport and a plane-load of people make it seem very hectic, because there aren't that many check-in agents (after all, there are only a few "big" flights a day to the US mainland or Asia.) You will need to send your bags through the agricultural scanner before you proceed to the check-in counters. Then the same crush repeats at the TSA lines. So plan ahead and leave Hawaii with Aloha rather than breathless. All other flights are inter-island Hawaiian Airlines flights about once an hour. Check in for these go fairly smoothly with a commuter-type atmosphere. You will be charmed by Hilo airport! PS if you are flying in from Honolulu, choose a window seat on the right-hand side of the plane for the best view of Maunakea and Maunaloa and the Hamkua Coast just prior to landing. Leaving Hilo, the left side is best.

    Hilo Airport

This is a lovely, out-of-date, sleepy airport. The airport lounge is the best in the world, with its huge comfy armchairs, tons of space, and soft Hawaiian music. Gorgeous outdoor gardens and indoor-outdoor spaces feel very Hawaiian. Extremely easy access, parking, car rental, check-in and luggage retrieval. Drawback: pre-TSA design, so there is almost no food now accessible from the lounge area, since the old restaurant and bar are outside the secure area. Biggest improvement: install a real restaurant and a real bar within the vast underused lounge area.
