Airport Overview

To help you plan your layover or overnight sleepover, we are here to give you the low-down on what travellers have reported back to us during their time at Catania–Fontanarossa Airport.

What to Expect

  • A small single-terminal international airport, served mostly by seasonal commercial and charter flights
  • Restaurants close in the evening and there are no beverage vending machines so have food and beverages handy for later.
  • Power outlets for mobile charging are hard to find, so power up your electronics before you go to the airport and carry a power bank with you in case you are unable to locate an outlet.

Where to Sleep

  • For daytime naps, the airport’s seating is uncomfortable hard plastic bucket seats, but you can sleep comfortably on the floor if you have a travel mat or sleeping bag handy.
  • According to an October 2017 review, the airport now closes at night and it is not possible to stay inside the terminal. There are hotels near the airport. See Airport Hotels in the airport guide below.

Airport Transportation: Getting To/From The Airport

The airport offers a few options for both local and long distance buses. For easy access to the city centre take the AMT Alibus which runs every 20 minutes from 5:00AM - 12:00AM. This route provides connection to the city centre and the train station.

Information for long distance trains (for outskirts of Catania, Sicily, etc.) is available at the airport’s Information Desk. Tickets can be purchased at the Bus Ticket office in Arrivals (6:00AM - 10:00PM). You must validate your ticket before you board the bus (machines are located near the bus entrances), otherwise you may end up having to pay a fine of 50€ or more.

Car Rentals

These car rental agencies are available onsite: AG Transfers, Hertz Italiana, Holiday Car Rental, Hollywood Rent A Car, Italy Car Rent, Locauto/Enterprise and Noleggiare.

Metered taxis are available 24 hours a day at the airport and around Catania. Look for the yellow or white taxis with an illuminated “Taxi” sign on the top of the vehicle and the license number printed on the sides of the vehicle. Surcharges apply for trips to/from the airport, luggage, parties of more than 4 passengers and nighttime travel. If you order a taxi by phone, you will be charged for the distance the taxi had to travel to get to you, so you may want to hail a cab from a public place to save money. Total trip time between the airport and Catania city center is 15 minutes, and costs from 25€ - 40€. At the time of this December 2017 update, we were not able to confirm these rates.
