PDL Airport Overview

To help you plan your layover or overnight sleepover, here is a quick run-down about what to expect during your time at Ponta Delgada João Paulo II Airport.

What to Expect

Ponta Delgada Airport (code: PDL) is a small, modern terminal with ten gates and about a dozen shops and eateries. WiFi is available to help pass the time, as there is not much else.

Sleeping in Ponta Delgada Airport

ponta delgada airport guideThis airport is officially closed between midnight (or last commercial flight arrival) and 5:00 AM; however, airport security leaves a landside area open that is carpeted, contains a couple of benches, and provides bathroom access. The designated area is dark and quiet during the overnight hours, but space is limited. The area is also described as cold during the non-summer months, so consider bringing extra layers and/or a travel blanket if you intend to spend the night. For uninterrupted sleep, there are hotels near the airport.  See the Airport Hotels section below for locations, or read traveller airport reviews for more tips.

To help us keep this guide up-to-date, you can add or update information or write a review to submit airport tips and photos. You can also visit the airport’s website for current information. For more airport information, continue scrolling down to explore more in our Ponta Delgada Airport Guide.

In this guide we may refer to locations as “landside” and “airside”. Landside is the public area of the terminal located in the non-secure zone, before security. Airside is the secure area of the terminal that you must reach by going through security.  For more information on Europe’s Schengen Area, click here.

rest zonesRest & Relaxation Zones

The Living Spot is a comfortable place to work, relax, get flight or airport information, or charge your mobile devices. You’ll find one located near the airport’s shops and restaurants.

Take precautions, even when sleeping in the rest zones.  In December 2019, a traveller at another airport reported that money and credit cards had been stolen from their bag even though the bag was right beside them.  Protect and lock your bags as you would sleeping elsewhere in public.
