Pleasant sleep in Zurich airport

(Guest Review by Michelle W) I had a 20 hour layover in Zurich, having arrived in the morning and leaving the next morning. My checked bag had been checked to final destination, but I dropped off my extra hand luggage on arrival to Zurich at the left luggage counter by the service center above Arrivals 2; opening hours 06.00-22.30. The train from airport to city centre is CHF13.60 for a day ticket and is an easy, efficient service. After spending the day in Zurich (and taking part in the daily downtown free walking tour by local guides, which I can recommend), took the train back to the airport to collect hand luggage and go airside to settle in for the night. The 'Center Bar' in the waiting area near E gates has long flat couches in enclosed booths, perfect for sleeping. The bar had closed and cleaners had passed through the area by 23.00, and staff returned in the morning around 05.00, so there was time for a decent sleep. Music is played in the area and there is some ambient light, so earplugs and eyemask are helpful. A handful of other passengers also slept in the same area. There are no PA announcements overnight. We weren't woken by security or bothered by cleaners during our sleep. Overall, I was quite happy with my stay at Zurich Airport. An alternative sleeping area I'd seen is at B gates, where there are sections of seats with 3 in a row and no armrests. Free wifi is available by registering with your mobile number to receive a code by text for 2 hours' access. If receiving text doesn't work (it didn't for me), scan boarding pass for a code at wifi access consoles including near E gates. Food outlets are closed by around 22.30, so bring your continued >>

Got good sleep

(Guest Review by travel_champ) I got there by 10pm and first thing I did was I scanned all the three terminals to find suitable spot to sleep. I could not find terminal 1 and 3 suitable for sleeping so I decided to sleep near security control area on top floor in terminal 2. This top floor is very big and there are lot of spots where you can spend the night. Everything was almost closed by 11:00 pm. The black metal chairs (group of 4 chairs) are OK (not the best) for sleeping as they don't have armrest. This area is around bye bye bar and they have nice sofas outside their bar which can be used at night for sleeping. Initially for hour or so I tried to sleep on metal chairs (3) by using my bag as pillow and was able to sleep. There were other 4 people in the same area who were their with me until morning so I was not feeling lonely. After some time (around 11.45pm ) I landed myself on one of the sofa and was able to sleep their until 5am (until bar was opened).

Stuck in limboland!

(Guest Review by Ford Prefect) If you arrive with the intention of spending the night, you will receive a pamphlet for the airport hotel. They offer cots for about 6hours. Don't be fooled! The price is about double during the night (~40 euros) . If you don't want to pay that be careful because you can get trapped (like I was) in the international zone where the hotel is. The boarder is closed between 11pm and 6am. The rest of the airport is quite comfortable with nice benches and there are no announcements after 9pm. The tradeoff is that there is almost nothing in the way of food when you are past security.

Zurich Airport Review

(Guest Review) It was perfectly clean and quiet and stylish. There were several shopping options, though not as many as some other airports I've been to. The Starbucks was crazy expensive in my opinion. 7 for a cup of brewed coffee. But, maybe that's normal in Switzerland. Not many lounging style seats, but if you use your luggage as a prop, you could get a good nights rest.

(Guest Review) Indoor smoking halls should simply be outlawed! The whole departure gate (22 and surroundings; heaving to US on Swiss Air) smelled intensely of smoke. Disgusting and healthy.

(Guest Review) On arrival from Luxembourg I went to the information counter and found it unmanned so I went and had dinner before returning. My boarding card for the next flight was incomplete and I wanted clarification on the gate I should go to to catch my flight. On my return to information there was still no one there to assist me so I picked up the phone and was advised to wait as this flight would be announced 1 hour before the departure time and the Gate Number Would appear on the electronic board. I sat watching the board until it went black and then rushed around trying to find someone who could help. The personal at Gate E had left, the Police Station was closed and all Exits where locked. I ended up sleeping on the departure seating for the night. I thought I had missed the flight but when the lady in the Swiss Air office glanced at my ticket she immediately saw the 11:50 and told me that my flight was later that day. If you wanted to, you could say I have myself to blame but it appears that you do not use the 24 hour clock on your tickets / documents it is for this reason that I was confused, however, the crux of the matter is, if your information desk was manned for the duration of your airport operations this would have been pointed out to me immediately on arrival at the information desk and I could have taken the necessary action. In the interests of National Security, the traveling public and the airport facility The Police Station should be manned 24 hours per day. While you have flights taking of and landing you should provide customer service at your information counters. Besides all of this, I enjoyed my visit to Zurich but would war continued >>

Bad Experience - Duty Free Catch 22

by web-administrator (September, 2015)

(Guest Review by Ron Magee) Worst airport on earth. I purchased duty free liquor in USA. Flight was Newark, NJ to Zurich, then connecting to Milan. Getting off the plane in Zurich we immediately had to go through security. I had the properly packaged liquor with me in a secure, tamper-evident sealed bag. I was told the packaging was not correct and the Zurich TSA ripped apart the stapled bag and confiscated the liquor. I am sure they have many parties with this illegitimate seizure of duty free properly packaged liquor. I will continue to go out of my way to discourage traveling to or through Zurich. The law effect 2014 is as follows internationally: The new TSA rules that allows duty-free liquor in carry-ons does come with limitations, though. Bottles must be purchased in duty-free shops overseas, and they must be placed in 'secure, tamper-evident bags' (also known as STEBs) that are subject to screening by the TSA. 'Technological advances may allow passengers to keep these liquids in their carry-on baggage,' the TSA said, 'provided they are presented in a STEB and are able to be screened and cleared by Transportation Security Officers at the checkpoint.'

Sleeping in Zurich Terminal A/B

by web-administrator (October, 2015)

(Guest Review) My flight from Madrid landed in Zurich at 10pm, and I was scheduled to depart for Helsinki the next morning at 6am. Instead of trying to find a hotel (which are quite expensive in the area) and worrying about whether or not I'd be able to make through security for my early-morning flight I decided to sleep at the Zurich airport. Since my bags were being checked through to my final destination (Helsinki) I didn't leave the post-security boarding area of Terminal A/B. The stores had pretty much all closed by the time my flight landed. I talked to the agents at the Transfer desk and they said lots of people sleep at the terminal. I found a spot that was a little bright and started to settle in. A security guard came by and asked if I had a boarding pass for an ongoing flight, and I did and showed him. I appreciate that they check on that kind of thing, made me feel safe. I wasn't the only person trying to catch a few zzzs in the terminal because I saw a few other people, but it wasn't super busy either. The chairs aren't super comfortable to lay on, but if I used my backpack as a pillow it wasn't too bad. I'd sleep for an hour, then wake up. I did try finding some more comfortable chairs but the only really comfortable chairs were at a coffee shop, which had really loud music playing. Staff for the stores/restaurants came in to setup around 530am, so if started getting busy then. You probably won't get much sleep after that. This wasn't the best sleep I ever had, but it's sleeping at an airport, and I did manage to get a few hours of sleep. It felt very safe in the boarding area, and the airport itself was clean. I found going to the benches by continued >>

(Guest Review) Due to late arrival from Munich a missed a flight. The transfer desk was manned by a few staff only. One had to queue standing for over an hour to be checked in for the next flight. No chairs or seating facilities were provided for handicapped or elderly people. However, it you are a foreign millionaire or billionaire, Zurich will be your first choice. There are discreet banking services behind security steel doors where you can deposit your well-laundered money or launder it without having to bother going into town.

(Guest Review) there are plenty of places to sleep, you can easily find a quiet gate to sleep at without anyone bothering you, there are some comfy lounge chairs (I forget at which terminal), my only complaint would be that it is sometimes hard to navigate as signage is a bit confusing and there aren't that many people available to ask for help

(Guest Review) Everything is closed super early, super expensive... the benchs are divided two-two... so it's difficult to fit yourself there overnight. Only good choice is to go to the couches in some open air bars, but then they wake you up at 5 am...

(Guest Review) I only use this airport for connecting flights (Europe to Asia) but it does seem very expensive for modest refreshments during the long wait. But in general, the people and facilities are fine and would receive no complaints from me.
