"In the West Africa sub-region, Abidjan's Houphet-Boigny airport must be one of the best. I was truly impressed to see an airport of this style and maintenance in the sub-region. The security staff are really helpful and very friendly which I found amazing considering that that usually isn't the case in rest of the sub-region where most uniformed personnel feel they have made it and want to display their authority. On the contrary, in this airport, the immigration officers and security officers were very nice. The restaurant is very nice and twice I spent almost 10 hours there sitting, eating, and mostly just conversing with two other scholars and one traditional leader (chief). The seats in the restaurant are cushioned but the backs are wooden. The seats by the gates are all hard plastic bucket types. Aside from these two types of seating arrangements, there's nothing else. Well, there is a VIP lounge with sofa seats but you'd have to have a voucher or be at a certain level of membership in a frequent flyer programme to use it. So, that was the only major negative point about this airport. It would be nice to have more comfortable seats there were not all just facing the restaurant."

"I was in the Accra airport for seven hours in November 2004.I had a case of food poisoning and every single washroom in the airport was out of order. The airport had no running water and hadn't for several days. Imagine a toilet which has not been flushed for 3 days. When I needed to go to the bathroom, I would walk to a building adjacent to the terminal and go to a less frequently used bathroom which was a little less stinky. I really loved Ghana and had one of my best trips ever there but the airport was total misery."
