Port-au-Prince Airport

Lasting Impressions....

"The airport, which does not actually have terminals, is in a constant state of chaos." (?)

"if you are a woman I would highly suggest finding UN or US soldiers and sleep near them." (?)

tell us how much this airport rocked!

Arrivals is calm until you try to go get your bag, then you will be mobbed by porters. Just give up and pick a porter, it is the only way you will ever make it to your bag, let alone the door. If you don't have a car waiting, make your porter get you one and put you in it-- the area outside the airport is more chaotic than the inside. Better yet, have a car reserved and tell the driver to meet you at your arrival gate. None of the airport staff will speak english and you will do better going through immigration with your driver, even if he doesn't speak english either. Be patient, polite, and flirt if you think it will help.

Getting out of Haiti is pretty easy. The departure side is not bad, if you must stay the night. Go upstairs and hang out in the cafe/gift shop area. You can buy a frozen pizza and have it heated up for you. Buy some rum, and make friends. This area would be better for sleeping than the gate (which is back downstairs).
