Belfast International Airport

At night is quiet BUT stay away from the blinking arcade machines. I kept being awakened by a voice inviting me to ' race like a demon around some course. -Big Bad Jeff

"Belfast International (Aldergrove) is, in many ways, the ideal airport to sleep in. The whole place basically shuts down after the last flight leaves so you can be assured it's quiet, hence sleeping is easy. It is boring as hell mind you and if you want to smoke it's a pain as there is only one designated smoking area in the entire place which is closed along with the rest of the airport at about 23:00. You can go outside and smoke but it's ussually pretty cold.

Just before you hit the security heading to the departure gates there is a Kiddies play area, Burger King and a few other food shops, also some kind of nail bar / salon place if you feel the need to do whatever it is that gets done in such places. The seats at this point are very comfortable, stuffed leather things. Among the best seats I recall seeing in any airport for sleeping on. Don't bother looking elsewhere unless these are taken as every other seat in the airport is a bucket type with armrests.

There is a prayer / quiet room in the airport although I honestly can't remember if you can gain access to these before check in. Apparently they also have nice seats but it gets locked up thus negating the prospect of kipping in there.

Obviously with the lack of any form of night flights in this airport and it's comparitively small size there is very little in the way of additional facilities for the overnight resident. The toilets are clean enough though.

Depending on the time of year / present political climate in Northern Ireland there will either be NO security, at all or policemen carrying MP5's, either way, they won't bother you. Cleaning staff will be hovering about at around 6am, they won't bother you either, other than to say hello to the strange person sleeping in the airport."
