A few airport reviews from the archives

by MartinO2, 11/9/2008
The night I spent at Bilbao airport was much better, than I expected from reading previous reviews on this site.
Yes, the airport closes for night (from 12pm to 5am). But there are two waiting areas overlooking baggage belts, where you can sleep with no problem. (I had early departure at 7.30 am and also didnt want to pay for a hotel, so I went straight to the information desk and ask lady there, if there is any place I can stay overnight. She told me, that I could sleep in the waiting area, and I did so).
In the hallways are couple of stylish white seats without armrest with some sort of coushion, so you are not sleeping on marvle. I spend a night there in mid-november, and i wasnt cold despite those areas are connected to open air. Temperature inside was however much higher (because of heating or something) than inside (9 celsius outside, about 15-16 celsius inside).
I settled down at about 11pm, used my backpack as a pillow, put 2nd pullower on, cover myself with lufthasa blanket and fall asleep. The last person I noticed at airport was a cleaning lady, during the night the airport is probably totaly deserted. I woke up at about 5am, just as someone was unlocking the main departure hall. I slept like a kid for whole 6 hours without and disturbance, which I have never achieved on any airport before (Maybe the fact, that i didn sleep for 48 had also something to do with it..:-)

Some useful tips:

1. Last bus departs bus station in bilbao for the airport at 21.55
2. Firts bus departs bus station in Bilbao for the airport at 5.25
3. Bus runs every 30 minutes, costs 1.30EUR one-way
4. Bus ride to Bilbao(bus station) takes about 15 minutes, if there is not heavy traffic in the town, if there is, it could take up to 40 minutes to get there.
5. There are some snack and drink machines in hallways, so you can buy something also during the night
6. There is one open toilet during the night, you have to go out the hallway and then left, the toilets are almost on the end of building. (If you cant find it, look at the terminal map)
7. Last but not the least: Bilbao is one of the most beautiful towns i have ever seen with great combination of historic and modern architecture, it is definetly worth visiting...

It's true that the airport closes by midnight so the guards said I couldn't stay there but they took me to the corridors, or should I say galleries that are on side of the terminal building. This part stays open and in fact it doesn't have doors so it's connected with open air. I think that might mean that in winter it can be quite cold, however when I stayed there the temperature outside was still very pleasant. The benches are hard but without armrests. Not recommended unless it's summer and you have no alternatives.
