A few airport reviews from the archives

"I passed through Chisinau airport entering and leaving the country. As a whole I was very impressed with the place. The staff was friendly and helpful, the place was clean and it was well laid out for a stranger to navigate. The only drawback was a little residue from the communist era...on leaving I had to show my passport 5 times - to get in the gate area, to have my checked luggage screened, to check my luggage, to show my boarding pass, and to clear security. Other than that minor irritation, the place was very efficient and a pleasant airport to visit. On entry, I cleared customs and was in a cab within 20 minutes of landing. Leaving I was through security and at the bar in less than 1/2 hour. Compared to other east European airports, this one is a class act."

The passport people wear old-styled Soviet military gear complete with ushankas. There are two money exchange bureaus with poor rates, but they will accept just about any currency. Only one of the 5-7 shops were open and it only sold wine. Even though announcements aren't made, the staff went out of their way to find an English or French-speaking staff to help out when asked. The airport wasn't busy - not many flights go through Chisinau - checking in was fast and easy, and English-speaking airport staff were happy to chat with foreigners as so few tourists go to Moldova. This was a plus as the airport is tiny with nothing to do except smoke at the bar and watch mechanics fix up Aeroflot planes.

I travel to Moldova every other week for business and have learned that the best way to get in and out of the airport with out a major bother is to arrive at the airport about 30 minutes before your flight and give the customs a 10 bill, and then you will see how fast they run you to your flight, just make sure you and him are the only ones to see this as if there are any more you will have to pay many other copes and costume officials.

Moldova is a great place to have fun but you need to be ready to bribe your way via the local government"
