I got into Imam Khomenei International Airport late at night and spent the early hours of the morning there sleeping. It is very new and modern and very clean. The seats are metal benches and not terribly comfortable. VERY secure. There are all-night facilities (wc, food) There are a lot of international flights arriving late at night so it's very busy and the main drawback is that constant announcements on the loudspeaker. You can definitely sleep here - nobody will pay any attention whether you have a ticket or not. I don't know if lying down on the floor would go over so well though. On the way back I had a 4 AM flight so slept quite a bit here then too. The best place is in arrivals. Also: it is possible to get into Tehran by public transport for 20,000 IRR (instead of taxi for 150000)- take the shuttle bus from right outside arrivals to Mehrebad airport (signed in English to Azadi Square) and asked to be dropped off the haram-e motahar or shohada metro stops.

"There are two international terminals at Tehran Merabad airport built next to each other. The older one is very busy with flights to Kish Island and other short-haul flights. You would not get much sleep there. The new terminal next door which I used, has very few flights, thanks to Iran being 'out in the cold' politically. Once past Customs its almost deserted. There's a very small Duty Free shop (lots of carpets, but no grog, of course) and a reasonable cafe. The Men's Toilets have squat toilets only. If you walk away from this area you will find large deserted areas with subdued lighting and rows of empty padded chairs. Its very quiet if you want a sleep as no flights leave from this area except during the pilgrimage time. No-one minds if you curl up on the floor as sleeping on floors in the mosques or on the grass in the park seems quite accepted all over Iran. Officially its a no-smoking airport- but its so large you can easily find a place for a puff if you are desperate."
so, just how bad is this airport?
