    Dar es Salaam Airport

International Terminal – Our flight was in the middle of the night and we had to wait outside on the benches for many hours. Everything was closed and the staff didn't let us inside the terminal before the check-in time. There was an eating place inside but after check-in there was no time to eat before boarding.

Terminal 1 – We had to wait here for 6 hours. Lack of places to go and eat or just sit. Toilets awful and not enough to cope with numbers. Cockroaches in the food outlet on the second floor available pretty and post checkin. Left with diarrhoea and vomiting.

    Dar es Salaam Airport

Queues at least an hour long to just get into the airport. Another hour for security. An hour on the way back to get a transit boarding pass. About 30 mins for passport control. Restaurant not bad at all. Service rapid and food acceptable.

    Dar es Salaam Airport

    08.12.2015

Pros: NIL Cons: No air-conditioning. It is really, really warm inside. Poor food quality in cafeteria. Ordered toasted cheese sandwich – the bread was not buttered, one slice of cheese which covered only half of the bread. Not worth the money. Incompetent staff who don't know anything about frequent flier and give false information.

    Dar Es Salaam Airport

International Terminal – My Turkish Airlines flight leaves and arrives during the night so I have not seen this airport during the day. (If you fly them to Istanbul they do not serve a meal until 2 hours before landing so don’t go hungry!) Luggage carts from the carpark/drop off point are free and easily available. A car can drop you within 100 feet of the entrance. You can enter the airport 3 hours in advance of your international flight. This is a very small airport terminal. Departure: The inside of the airport is quite hot so dress in layers. Having a magazine or something to fan yourself is also useful. The departure procedure is that you first get your passport checked at a small desk that is not the same as the turn in luggage counter. Then you go to the back wall where you will see the ticket agents. You put your luggage on old fashioned dial scales and then hand it over. They check you in.

After check in you walk to the customs/immigration point. If you are not a resident or citizen of Tanzania you will have to fill out an exit card. Then you go upstairs through security and wait for your plane. There are a few small shops and one small restaurant. There is one exclusive lounge for use by 1st/business class passengers that serves all the airlines that go in and out of Dar. It is below ground level so really has mosquitos but free samosas and sodas. Arrival: There are normal bridges to the airplanes. You have to walk from the departures/arrival level of airport downstairs to the arrivals hall. These are about 2 flights of narrow stairs. Sometimes they check your yellow fever vaccination even if you are coming from Turkey! Sometimes they do not check any vaccinations. If you are visa on arrival then get in the line. If you have a visa already march straight up to the windows past all the crowds. The last bathroom is just to the left of the passport checking booths. It is clean and Western style. Beyond that you claim your bags which are xrayed before you leave. Free luggage carts are a plus. These areas are very warm so dressing in layers is helpful. Taxi stand is just outside the door. You will be instantly swarmed with people offering taxi, hotel. Decline their offers and move away and get your bearings and decide what you want to do. 🙂 Be warned that traffic in Dar can be terrible so don’t leave the airport needing to go to the bathroom! There is no hotel at the airport. There are no shower facilities at the airport. There is no where at night to buy mobile phone simcard or top up credit. I think during the day you can buy them.
