Khartoum Airport

The litter bins are emptied on a strict schedule, so garbage is piling up in a circle around them. Toilets can be found by just following the stench.  I recommend you have a look at the toilets first and decide afterwards whether you really need anything to eat or drink. - Wolfram

"This airport is a nightmare. I arrived at 02:45 in the morning and the place was already very busy. Lots of porters carrying mega sized suitcases and cardboard boxes around and are very reluctant to give way, so watch out. The first x-ray machine awaits you in the entrance hall. If you are not quick enough to put all your belongings on the conveyor belt then someone else will push you aside and place his stuff instead. Sudanese hate to queue up for anything. Check-in is in the adjacent hall. You will be told to pay an airport fee of 20 USD. There are no signs informing you about that, but the personnel behind the counter will refuse to check you in unless you can show a stamp indicating you paid. Line up in front of another counter on the right side of the check-in hall and block all Sudanese attempting to squeeze past you. Pay 20 USD. Return to check-in.Go through passport control. Look left and you will find your unaccompanied luggage again lying on the floor. Take it and have it x-rayed one more time. After that the airport staff is finally taking care of it. Remove all metal items from your body. Put your personal belongings on another conveyor belt leading to one more x-ray device. Hurry up or you will have some five Sudanese men or women between your items and yourself. Go through the metal detector. If it beeps you are sent back in a rather rude manner. Remove your belt and try again. Collect your belongings. Enter the departure lounge. There is a TV set with Al-Jazeera at high volume. The no-smoking signs are ignored by the locals. The litter bins are emptied on a strict schedule, so garbage is piling up in a circle around them. You won't find any gate number on your boarding pass, so grab any of the green bucket type seats and wait. Announcements are in very loud Arabic (loud Al-Jazeera!) followed occasionally by muffled English. Don't waste your time looking for signs indicating in- or outbound flights and arrival or departure times, there are none. Toilets can be found by just following the stench. OK, there are signs, too. You can get snacks or non alcoholic drinks from a line-up of refrigerators. They also serve hot tea in little cardboard cups. However I recommend you have a look at the toilets first and decide afterwards whether you really need anything to eat or drink. From time to time a crowd of passengers will rush to a gate. Try to catch a glimpse at their boarding passes. If they look like the one you have then your flight is obviously ready for boarding. If not, then return to your seat.If you have to arrive at Khartoum airport make sure your electronic stuff is evenly distributed among all your bags. If you put all in one bag you will find a chalk mark on it which means you will be stopped at the exit and sent back for a detailed search (all luggage is x-rayed on arrival). Unless you have a diplomatic passport (I had), you will have to unpack all your belongings and most probably face tedious customs and security procedures. If you don't have to go to Khartoum Airport then don't go there.
