Lasting Impressions....

"A most horrible airport unless you are a very strong cigarette smoker." (?)

"Later the same security guy came over and brought me a cup of tea which was all very civilised!" (Standanista)

"The most disgusting toilets I have come across. I gagged as I tried to not step in the human waste that surrounded the filthy squat toilet.  Actually, as I write this, I am starting to gag. " (Mo)

"I spent the following 7 hours sitting upright on a wooden bench near the parking lot, doused in mosquito spray and aurally manipulated by a loop of gamelan bells." (?)

"Spent 10 hours there as Garuda flights never go on time or just "disappear" for no reason what so ever." (?)

Good times

"Had an early morning flight to one of the outlying islands and decided to bum-down at the airport rather than get a room for 6 hours or so. There are a couple of small-hours arrivals but nothing major by way of disturbance - the only hassle was the mosquitoes, really. As it's warm outside, and I only had a 15kg daypack, I layed out on one of the wooden covered benches outside and got a couple of hours kip. Very few folk about. One of the few people was one of the security staff who spent half the night practicing gamalan off in the distance - it was all quite atmospheric laying there with the sound of distant bamboo notes and surrounding earthy smells, in the heat of the tropical night! Later the same security guy came over and brought me a cup of tea which was all very civilised! He was a bit nonplussed as to why a "rich" farang chose to hang around all night rather than pay for an hotel room, but no hassle whatsoever and ended up trying to teach me gamalan and me to him English. All in all quite a memorable experience."

Not a bad place, but not great either

Arrived at this airport at 11pm from Heathrow, due to fly out on domestic flight at 8am the next day. As a lone traveller I was wary about Denpasar due to my experiences in Jakarta airport the year before! Left the international terminal towards the domestic terminal (walking distance through some nice lit walkways) which had closed just before I arrived. Sitting on one of the few benches with a backrest I was approached by 2 members of cleaning staff. Expecting to be asked to move on or likewise I was pleasantly surprised when they sat down, offered me cigarettes and were happy to chat for over an hour - me in my rough-Indonesian and them in broken-English. They left when their shift ended! While the buildings themselves are closed there are some kiosks which show TV all night so I joined a welcoming group of security guards who were as friendly as the cleaners to watch a football match. Finally needing some sleep I settled on one of the flat benches, curled around my backpack. The benches are great; wide and long enough to really stretch out if you so choose! I wasn't disturbed all night and awoke at 6am to catch my flight.
On the return leg I had to wait all day for the connection but the baggage storage was available for just a few pounds for an entire day! Definitely one of the better airports to get your head down in, even if you have to stay outdoors!!

Um, you may want to rethink sleeping in this place

"Arrived late at night after riding in from Baud, ready to leave the next morning. Had been led to believe I could at least wait out the night in the terminal, if not catch some shut-eye. No. Kicked out of the terminal around midnight, even though I could show a boarding pass for a flight in the morning, though I did at least check my large bags before grumpily wandering outside. I spent the following 7 hours sitting upright on a wooden bench near the parking lot, doused in mosquito spray and aurally manipulated by a loop of game lan bells. To this day I feel strangely fixated and uneasy when I hear game lan. My own fault, to be sure, but still a thoroughly terrible sleeping-in-airports experience."
