Macau is a great place to visit and transit through especially trnasit to Hong Kong as many discount carriers use Macau rather than HK.

The airport is not "International" standards in any way. Located outside main areas of Macau its a approx a 15minute bus or 10minute taxi from anything.

What's good about Macau airport?
Other than its use by discount carriers (Viva Macau, Air Macau, AirAsia and many others) its not a place I would recommend to ANY traveller.

What did I not like ?
- Small three story building with escalators at either end of the building.
- No shops outside the security zone.
- No duty free outside security zone. No vending machines (that work!!) either.
- No shops outside airport except if you take taxi. Hilton Hotel is adjacent but it also offers no retail sales even for drinks, newspapers, cigarettes etc
- Area outside security zone has VERY few seats. Certainly noweher to sleep, lay down. Our family couldn't find seats.
- Food court does operate during major operational hours and offers a VERY limited choice of drinks, "meals" and other food. I say limited since they offer sandwiches but nobody wants to make them if other foof is available. Not great, expensive.
- EVERYONE smokes in the food court which is the only place to sit and wait out a flight. Its revolting. Beer is available so loud groups of drinkers and smokers share the area. Some no smoking tables are available but this is a joke as all shares same air conditioning system.
- Check-in is restricted to 2.5hrs prior to flight so youcant enter security zone before then.

Check-in security requires XRay before entry but its manual so get the kids to stand away. Its stupid really

Once through check-in there are many stores and food options on the other side but not a massive choice. Heaps of seating and places to lie down and rest.

WARNING - If you buy water or drinks (even if unopened) in the security zone you will be required to throw it out before boarding for SOME countries. Australia, Japan, Canada, and others but otherwise nowhere else in Asia as far as I could tell.

Tip - Avoid going to airport until as late as possible. Its not a place to wait out a long transit.

Smoking bar is secure area is a laugh. Its a low wall suction a/c type. All people cram in there and smoke and blow smoke upwards which makes it a waste of space. Its funny to watch and take video of . Friends back home will find it very funny.
