"As a pilot I love airplanes and airports. This one is special. One wall is set up to look out onto the runways and then blue coral reefs past them. I watched jet fighters make parachute assisted landings against a backdrop where you could not see where the water ended and the sky began. You see the ground crew line up when the plane is pushed back and they all bow to the plane as it leaves. I watched them do this even during a mid-summer squall. Inside there are restaurants and quick food places that are really quick. They have waitstaff with wireless connections punch in your order back to the kitchen. If you have more time you can relax in them also. Other places give you pagers that light up to notify you when the order is up.The shops inside are very good. The prices are exactly the same as in the city but in lots of ways the selection is better. There are aquariums with fantastic tropical fish all over. Fantastic coral reef life. The ramps and walkways have blooming orchids every meter. Even the jetways are lined with them. There are cultural experiences in the main lobby area. Singers, dancers, musicians make your stay special. I would have paid good money to listen to one girl. Later she grabbed my hand to teach me a dance. We watch 500 Japanese Boy Scouts assembled there on their way to a jamboree. I was surprised to see how attentive they were listening to the instructions of their leaders. But the best thing there are the people. Okinawan people treat everyone as brothers and sisters. They do not do this because they are working at an airport. They always do this. No Okinawan ever yells, no one litters, no one steals. This is one reason that they live the longest of anyone in the world. So at this airport, it is no wonder that there is no crime, everyone is smiling and everything is beautiful.Yes, I could have slept, but I did not and I have experiences to remember for the rest of my life because of it. "Staying in Naha airport in Okinawa Japan is pretty much impossible. Tiled floors, no seating at all....Only a drink machine that I saw. Don't get stuck here with a typhoon coming. Even if you get the last Japanese plane out, that may not be lucky....they fly long after the U.S. military flights are grounded...The Japanese are more into testing fate. If you are American military affiliated, try to get to the closest large base (Kadena)...If they have no rooms left, they will let you sleep in the lobby , have coffee, hot cocoa, sodas, TV, phone, limited junk food....and MRE's....and plan on being locked down for 2-5 days that way!"
