Queuing for check-in, it seems, is not something that proud Malatyans lower themselves to doing - it being far more manly to push your way to the front of one of the two wooden counters in one enormous scrum. -RJ

Malatya airport is served daily by one flight operated to Istanbul (Ataturk) and another to Ankara (with connections to Istanbul) - both operated by Turkish Airways. The small passenger terminal is, as one might expect, somewhat lacking in facilities. Queuing for check-in, it seems, is not something that proud Malatyans lower themselves to doing - it being far more manly to push your way to the front of one of the two wooden counters in one enormous scrum - before passing your overladen bags to the handling staff who carry (yes carry) them to the trolleys out on the tarmac. If you're going to fly from here you've got to be brave, and very pushy.Since there is just one bus from the city centre for each flight, upon which 90 of the passengers appear to travel, there is little pospect of having the time to sleep even if you can find a spot in the heaving room that passes for a waiting lounge. Seats are hard to come by, and were of the "metal with armrest" variety.Transport to the aircraft is provided courtesy of your own feet, after you have visually identified your baggage on the apron (don't forget to do this, as we nearly did!).The one facility which the airport does appear to have invested in substantially, is security. I don't know if all airports are like this in Turkey, or if it was simply because the civillian terminal shared its airfield with the military, but security guards were in abundance - and one had to pass through two sets of metal-detectors: one to enter the airport, and another to enter the one and only gate. Infact, during our two hours trip to Istanbul (changing in Ankara) we had to pass through no less than four security check-points.So - in conclusion - a friendly, interesting, boistrous airport with absolutely no chance of a nap!"
