The security staff will not let you sleep, they will kick you to [the] arrival area, then in two hours to [the] departure area and in another hours they keep running around you to wake u up. Horrible. Only one working electric outlet in [the] whole airport. Did I mention toilets ? Horror! You will not believe this until you check it on your own. -mandela

BGY Airport Overview

To help you plan your layover or overnight sleepover, here is a quick run-down about what to expect during your time at Bergamo Orio al Serio Airport (Code: BGY).

What to Expect

Bergamo Airport is a mid-size, two-level terminal with 11 departure gates and a wide selection of eateries and shops on both sides of security. WiFi is available, and there are some charging stations. For additional services and comforts, economy-class passengers can pay to access one of the airport’s private lounges.

Sleeping in Bergamo Airport

According to many travellers, Bergamo Airport offers a lower quality of airport sleeping. The seating areas are few and far between. The seats you can find are metal, uncomfortable, and un-sleepable due to the armrests. But you will find plenty of fellow travellers setting up camp on the floor. If you do plan on joining them, bring a few extra layers of clothing or, even better, a sleeping mat or bag for a more comfortable rest. Expect to be surrounded by many other travellers, and don’t be shocked if you get poked awake by a cleaner with a broom.

Landside – Recent reviews describe the landside arrivals hall as crowded, bright, cold and noisy overnight, with very limited seating, dirty or closed washrooms and staff who often wake sleeping passengers and move them along; some travellers also mention homeless or “sketchy” people sharing the space, so strong nerves and a willingness to sleep on the floor are essential. A small passageway near the tourist information desk was mentioned as better than other areas. Several travellers felt generally safe thanks to constant security patrols and the number of people around, but many still reported getting little or no real sleep.

Airside – Travellers report that the departures area typically closes around midnight and reopens in the early hours; some were kept in arrivals until security opened, while others were allowed through earlier, so overnight access and enforcement of “no sleeping” rules seem to vary from night to night. Those who managed to stay airside generally found it quieter and less crowded than arrivals, with a more relaxed attitude from staff, 24-hour cafés/bars and vending machines, but still complained about bright lights, cool temperatures and frequent loud announcements and music.

  • A Gates (Airside) – departure/transit area used by many overnight passengers; quieter and more spacious than landside, with some armrest-free seating, a 24/7 bistro/café and other food options, but still bright and often chilly.
  • B Gates (Airside) – upstairs food court. (Updated: Nov 2025)

For uninterrupted sleep, there are nine sleep pods in the terminal and hotels nearby. See Airport Hotels in the guide below.

In this guide we may refer to locations as “landside” and “airside”. Landside is the public area of the terminal located in the non-secure zone, before security. Airside is the secure area of the terminal that you must reach by going through security.

Airport Hours

Bergamo Airport is open 24 hours for landside access. Airside typically closes after the last departing flight (around 1:00 AM) and reopens around 4:00 AM for security screening. A valid boarding pass is required to remain airside overnight.

No official rest zones exist at BGY. Informal relaxation spots have been spotted in these locations: Airside, near Gate 5 (limited armrest-free benches, quieter late-night) • Landside, near Level 0, Arrivals lounge (basic seating, less crowded post-midnight). Security & Safety

At the time of this update, we have no reports from travellers commenting on safety issues at Bergamo Orio al Serio Airport. However, sleeping in any airport can include a certain level of risk, especially when travelling alone. It’s essential to take certain precautions to ensure your safety and the security of your valuables. Here are a few tips:

  • Safety First. It’s a good idea to know where the security office is and look for video cameras where you plan to sleep. You can also ask the security personnel for advice on the safest places to spend the night.
  • Don’t Seclude Yourself. If you’re travelling alone, we recommend you stay near other travellers or close to security. This will help you feel more secure and deter potential thieves.
  • Hide Your Valuables. It’s also important to hide your valuables. Please don’t leave them out in plain view, as this could make you a target for theft. Additionally, if you are a deep sleeper, you may want to padlock your bag to something or sleep with your bag up against a wall to make it harder for someone to access zippers and pockets. We have received reports of sleepers who awoke without their phones and laptop bags. The travellers were left with just their headphones and laptop bag strap.
  • Stay Alert. It’s best to stay alert and awake if you feel unsafe or uncomfortable. Drink coffee or other caffeinated beverages to help you stay awake, and remember that you can always catch up on sleep during your flight. These simple precautions can help you enjoy a safe night at the airport.
