Whether you have a layover, overnight sleepover or you are just quickly passing through, our Istanbul Ataturk Airport Guide is a great place to start planning your visit. Here, you’ll find information on services and facilities available inside the airport – including details about airport lounges, WiFi, mobile charging points, lockers, 24-hour food options, nearby hotels, and everything in between.
Too crowded and nearly zero space to put your feet up and relax on a long layover. Bars and restaurants are packed and very limited seating. Every time I fly through here I regret it. – a traveller (June 2016)
To help you plan your layover or overnight sleepover, we are here to give you the low-down on what travellers have reported back to us about their time at Istanbul Atatürk International Airport.
What to Expect
Istanbul Atatürk International Airport features two interconnected passenger terminals, with one serving domestic travel and the other, international. As Turkey’s largest airport, the facilities stay crowded at all times, and, despite significant seating, there is not enough seating to accommodate all travellers. Travellers have reported poor and rude customer service from staff, many of them who don’t seem to speak much English; but travellers feel safe due to enhanced security. Landside and airside shopping and dining services are available throughout the airport, with some eateries offering 24-hour service. WiFi is available, and there are some charging spots for re-charging mobile devices, but you will have to seek them out. For additional comfort while you wait, economy class passengers can pay to use one of the first-class airport lounges, some of which offer showers. See Airport Lounges in the airport guide below.
Where to Sleep
Travellers tend to recommend the International over the Domestic Terminal for better sleeping, though both are described as not having enough seating capacity for the number of passengers. That said, much of the seating, if you can get it, is described as comfortable and some of it armrest-free. Some gate areas are dimly lit at night, and might contain a free seat or comfortable corner spot. Try the corridor by Gates 201-204 for a quieter stay and cushioned seats. (August 2016 review). A few benches without armrests have also been spotted at Baggage Claim 10 (December 2015 review). Explore our guide to sleeping in Ataturk Airport or read some traveller reviews for more tips. For uninterrupted sleep, there is a hotel at the airport, and some others just a quick shuttle ride away. See Airport Hotels in the airport guide below.
