Sleeping in Airports

Melbourne Tullamarine Airport Guide

Whether you have a layover, overnight sleepover or you are just quickly passing through, our Melbourne Tullamarine Airport Guide is a great place to start planning your visit.  Here, you’ll find information on services and facilities available inside the airport – including details about airport lounges, WiFi, mobile charging points, lockers, 24-hour food options, nearby hotels, and everything in between.

They make almost continuous “This is a very special announcement for guest XXXX … ” calls that come so frequently and with such appalling sound quality that nobody ever seems to heed them – python

MEL Airport Overview

To help you plan your layover or overnight sleepover, here is a quick run-down about what to expect during your time at Melbourne Tullamarine Airport (Code: MEL).

What to Expect

Melbourne Tullamarine Airport consists of four terminals: T1, T2 and T3 are housed in the one interconnected building and a separate T4 within a 3-5 walking distance of the main complex. The terminals host a combined 68 gates, and all offer airside and landside dining and shopping options, with at least a couple providing 24-hour service. WiFi is available, though outlets to charge mobile devices may be hard to find (there are reportedly multiple outlets along the corridor between T3 and T4). Additional comfort can be found through fee-based access to one of the airport’s first-class lounges.

Sleeping in Melbourne Airport

Many travellers report difficulty finding successful sleeping spots in this airport, though we have received a few success stories. This is a less sleep-friendly airport, as a lot of seating has armrests and few quiet corners. Still, if you’re OK with sleeping on the floor, especially with layers to soften the tile floors, there should be plenty of space to stretch out.

Here are good sleep spots that travellers have reported:

  • Terminal 1 has benches in the Arrivals area, especially near the Qantas area.
  • Terminal 3, landside, there’s a corridor near the security checkpoint that is relatively quiet.
  • The corridor connecting Terminals 3 and 4 is relatively quiet and may be carpeted.

Avoid T4, as it reportedly gets locked down at midnight.  If you’re already inside the other terminals before closing time, you may be allowed to remain inside the landside areas. Be safe by having a backup plan ready!

For uninterrupted sleep, a hotel is connected to the airport by a covered walkway, and others are within a quick walk or free shuttle ride away. See Airport Hotels in the guide below.

Good to Know

Free showers can be found on both the airside and landside of Terminal 2.

Read some traveller reviews for more tips. For more airport information, continue scrolling down to explore more in our Melbourne Tullamarine Airport Guide.

To help us keep this guide up-to-date, you can add or update information or write a review to submit airport tips and photos.

In this guide we may refer to locations as “landside” and “airside”. Landside is the public area of the terminal located in the non-secure zone, before security. Airside is the secure area of the terminal that you must reach by going through security.

Airport Hours

The airport is open 24 hours on the landside across all terminals. Security checkpoints close overnight according to the flight schedules: T1 (1:00 AM–4:00 AM), T2 (2:00 AM–4:00 AM), T3 (1:00 AM–4:30 AM), T4 (midnight–4:00 AM). Airside passengers will need to move to the landside unless you are in transit with a boarding pass for your next flight.

Rest & Relaxation Zones

There are no dedicated sleeping areas, quiet areas or rest zones; however, informal relaxation spots with sleep friendly seating are scattered throughout the terminal. If this information has changed, click here to update this guide.

Cots

Cots are not offered to stranded travellers at Melbourne Tullamarine Airport. If this has changed, click here to update the guide.

Security & Safety

Airport staff seem OK with overnight travellers; however, there may be specific protocols on where they’ll let you stay overnight.

The good news is we have no reports from travellers commenting on safety issues at Melbourne Tullamarine Airport; however, reports of petty theft and pickpocketing on the landside exist elsewhere. Sleeping in any airport can include a certain level of risk, especially when travelling alone. It’s important to take certain precautions to ensure your safety and the security of your valuables. Here are a few tips:

  • Safety First. It’s a good idea to know where the security office is and look for video cameras where you plan to sleep. You can also ask the security personnel for advice on the safest places to spend the night.
  • Don’t Seclude Yourself. If you’re travelling alone, we recommend you stay near other travellers or close to security. This will help you feel more secure and deter potential thieves.
  • Hide Your Valuables. It’s also important to hide your valuables. Don’t leave them out in plain view, as this could make you a target for theft. Additionally, if you are a deep sleeper, you may want to padlock your bag to something or sleep with your bag up against a wall to make it harder for someone to access zippers and pockets. We have received reports of sleepers who woke up without their phones and laptop bags. The travellers were left with just their headphones and laptop bag strap.
  • Stay Alert. It’s best to stay alert and awake if you feel unsafe or uncomfortable. Drink coffee or other caffeinated beverages to help you stay awake, and remember that you can always catch up on sleep during your flight. These simple precautions can help you enjoy a safe night at the airport.

Pro-tip: If you sleep in the public zone, don’t be surprised if you receive an early morning wake-up call. Security is known to make the rounds, waking people up as travellers arrive for morning flights.
